Dan Rutzen is a conductor, musical director, accompanist and educator hailing from Marietta, Georgia. Skilled in choral, orchestral and theatre repertoire, Dan has had the opportunity to be involved in a great variety of musical performances.
As a musical director, Dan helmed the Dora winning production of Of A Monstrous Child: A Gaga Musical for Buddies in Bad Times Theatre and Ecce Homo Theatre. It was the 5th production that Dan has worked on with Ecce Homo Theatre which included performances of new works at SummerWorks, Rhubarb, Fringe and Next Stage Theatre Festivals.
Other Toronto productions include Living With Henry (Beyond Boundaries Theatre), Mimi (Tarragon), Napoleon (Talk Is Free) and Rufus Wainwright’s opera, Prima Donna (Luminato Festival).
Before moving to Canada, Dan was involved in several productions in Houston, Texas including Sweeney Todd, City of Angels, Songs for a New World, Parade, Into The Woods, Floyd Collins, Honk!, Suessical and Gyspy (with Andrea McArdle).
As a conductor, Dan is currently the AD for the Greater Toronto MegaCity Chorus, the 2011 Ontario District champions of the Barbershop Harmony Society.
He is also a performer and board member of the Canadian Men’s Chorus. He served 4 years as the associate conductor of the Metropolitan Community Church choir with Diane Leah where he conducted the choir at the 2010 Olympic Torch Relay in Nathan Phillips Square and at the state funeral for Jack Layton.
While in graduate school at the University of Toronto, Dan led performances of Maury Yeston’s song cycle, December Songs, conceived and performed Simply Sondheim for the Opera School and conducted the Faculty of Music’s production of Leonard Bernstein’s Candide.
Dan is a seasoned educator with public school choir and theatre experience as well as a roster of voice students in Toronto specializing in musical theatre and audition preparation.
