Emerging Artists Professional Program

 

New Music Theatre Intensives Emerging Artist Professional Program is designed to give artists and music theatre makers, ages 18+, the opportunity to DEVELOP and SHOWCASE their work. Through MENTORSHIP by industry professionals, workshops and master classes, this program allows artists to LEARN, EXPLORE, DEVELOP SKILLS, CREATE and SHARE.

MUSIC THEATRE LIKE YOU NEVER EXPERIENCED BEFORE!

Small select group of emerging artists (approx 10-14)
Led by a team of Toronto’s top industry professionals
Perform in an inventive contemporary music theatre production
Develop and challenge music theatre skills in singing, acting and dance
Masterclasses and specialized workshops with guests artists

Spring 2017 Emerging Artist Intensive

RARE opportunity to be part of the DEVELOPMENT of a new Canadian musical!  Work alongside Book Writer Matt Murray and Composer Colleen Dauncey to PERFORM in the workshop production of The Subway Songs!

The Subway Songs is a Canadian musical set entirely on a subway car over the course of one busy day. Through a variety of contemporary musical styles we get a glimpse into the beautiful, tragic and hilarious stories of commuters from all different walks (and rides) of life.

Songs Include: Can You Hear Me, Stepping Stone, It’s Been Awhile

About the Composers

Colleen Dauncey (Music) and Akiva Romer-Segal (Lyrics) are a contemporary musical theatre songwriting team based in Toronto, Canada. They have written the scores to The Subway SongsScenes From The Bathhouse (Talk Is Free Theatre), the Toronto Fringe hit Bremen Rock City (with librettist Sara Farb), and contributed material to Touch Me: Songs for a (dis)Connected Age (Forte Musical Theatre Guild, three Calgary Critics Awards including “Best Production of a Musical”). They also wrote the score to Prom Queen: The Musical, which premiered at the Segal Centre in Montreal and received the 2016 Stage West Pechet Family Musical Award by the Playwrights Guild Of Canada. Their show Rumspringa Break! (with librettist Matt Murray) was recently workshopped at Sheridan College’s Canadian Musical Theatre Project. Colleen & Akiva are currently Writers-in-Residence at Talk Is Free Theatre where they are developing Offline, a collective creation musical debuting in Spring 2017.

 

About the Stage Director 

Matt Murray (Book Writer/ Director) co-wrote the hit play Remember, Maggy? which was picked as “Best of Toronto Fringe” and has since gone on to four subsequent productions. His most recent play, Myth Of The Ostrich, was a hit at both the Toronto Fringe and the Next Stage Theatre Festival and went on to be presented as part of the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre’s 2016 season. Myth Of The Ostrich was most recently seen at The Guild Theatre in Whitehorse. For young audiences, Matt wrote the book for the musical pantomimes Peter and Tinker Bell’s Summer Adventure and Aladdin and Jasmine’s Summer Adventure; both for Theatre By The Bay, in Barrie. In 2016, Matt was part of the Canadian Musical Theatre Project at Sheridan as book writer for the new musical Rumspringa Break! An Am-ish Musical

 

 

Spring 2017 Emerging Artist Intensive
Take part in Master Classes with acclaimed industry artists and work alongside a highly-skilled and professional team to improve music theatre performance skills while performing in a premiere of a new Canadian musical Drama 101.
Writers will be meeting with the selected artists to create roles tailored to each of the performers.

Drama 101. You gotta start somewhere. “A funny and thought provoking new musical about the challenges and joys of becoming an adult.” When the former students of Roselawn High School gather to reminisce about their favourite drama teacher, secrets are revealed, old rivalries re surface and love blossoms.

Stage Director: Steven Gallagher is a Toronto based director, playwright and actor. Steven Gallagher’s play Memorial, was the winner of the 2011 Jury Award for Trafalgar 24, Driftwood Theatre’s twenty four hour Play Creation Festival. It was produced at the Factory Studio as part of the Next Stage Festival in 2013, and received readings at Half Moon Theatre in Poughkeepsie, NY, and Screaming Weenies Theatre in Vancouver. Craplicker was produced at the 2010 Toronto Fringe Festival, where it was chosen as Best of Fringe, and remounted at the Toronto Centre for the Arts. Now Magazine recognized it for Outstanding Direction and Outstanding Ensemble. His plays, Rules by Agnes and Memorial were initially written as part of Trafalgar 24. His play Stealing Sam will receive its premiere at the Toronto Fringe Festival in 2013. He is also an actor, recently seen at Neptune Theatre in Halifax as Albin in La Cage aux Folles, where he was nominated for a Merritt Award as Best  Actor in a leading role.  In 2013, he won a Harold Award.

Music Director: Kevin Wong, composer/lyricist/violinist based out of Toronto. Kevin Wong’s song cycle, Recurring John, debuted in a first concert reading as part of the 2014 SummerWorks festival in the Musical Works in Concert lineup then went on to premiere as part of the Chicago Musical Theatre Festival. Other projects:  Highrising (book & lyrics: Matthew Milo Sergi), Misprint (Book by Lauren Toffan, Additional lyrical & musical contributions by Yan Li), STAR!(ving) – A Collection of Songs (Originated in part at the Canadian Musical Theatre Project), Evie (co-lyrics & book: Matt Murray), and niángKevin is a previous participant of the Canadian Musical Theatre Project, a member of the Canadian Musical Theatre Writers’ Collective, a member of Theatre20’s Composium, and an alumnus of Acting Up Stage Company’s NoteWorthy program.

Video submissions for all out of town applicants and/or those who cannot make a live audition.

Live Audition Requirements:

  1.  Prepare 16-32 bars of two contrasting pieces from contemporary musicals
  2.  One contemporary monologue that is 1 minute or less (film, theatre or poems are acceptable)

Video Audition Requirements:

  1. Introduce yourself (name and what you will be performing)

Refund and Cancellation Policy for the Emerging Artist Professional Program:

All payments for the program are required in full by March 8th, 2017, in order to hold a space. Note: A fee of $20 will be charged for all NSF cheques.

Written notice is required for all withdrawals. If an emerging artist withdraws prior to April 1st, 2017, they will receive a refund minus a $200 non-refundable administration fee. No refunds will be issued to any artist after April 1st, 2017.
