Biography

With a teaching style rooted in individual style, vocal health and musical appreciation, Kathryn Johnston (she/her) is an intuitive teacher with a great attention to detail. In regular lessons with Kathryn, your voice will build the toolkit you need to sing and perform different genres effectively, while discovering a deeper love of music and storytelling and of course, having fun (and some laughs if you enjoy puns).

Kathryn has been teaching at Bravo Academy since 2022, working with students from age four to 40. She is well versed in instructing various genres with particular strength in classical and musical theatre technique. Her goal is to create a fun and exploratory atmosphere in lessons where skills are built and fostered each week and play is used to investigate the different ways in which you can use your voice. The importance of including music in one’s life is a strong belief of Kathryn’s and she absolutely loves working with students to achieve their musical goals and see their self-confidence grow as their voices grow.

Kathryn has seen numerous students through successful exams with the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) in both voice and piano. Her students have performed in music festivals such as the Kiwanis Music Festival and the North York Music Festival and some have even been invited to participate in the Regional Showcase. She also has students thriving in each level of Bravo’s Troupe program. As a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) and the Toronto Heliconian Club, Kathryn can offer additional rewarding performance opportunities for students displaying the aptitude and interest.

Kathryn holds a Master of Music in Opera from the University of British Columbia and a Bachelor of Music in Voice performance from the University of Toronto. She studied voice pedagogy with Dr. Shannon Coats at the University of Toronto and attended the 2025 International Congress of Voice teachers. Kathryn herself is an opera singer having performed with various orchestras and opera companies across the country, and she is a co-producer and member of the a cappella vocal quartet, the Fonitika Vocal Ensemble.
